This is what a report looks like

A real-life example, summarised, just to give you an idea of what it’s like.
Enquiry: «I want to export mature Manchego cheese to Japan – vacuum-packed wedges for supermarkets».

Example dated 28 September 2026, not updated. Requirements and tariffs change (those under the EU–Japan agreement are reduced every 1 April): do not use this for your transaction. For your product, request your own report, which is compiled using the current data.

Mature Manchego cheese · vacuum-packed wedges

Food and drink Demanding HIGH confidence

It can be exported, but this requires official health certificate, import notification with every delivery and label in Japanese. Under the EU–Japan agreement, you pay a 13 % duty-free, with no quota, compared with the general rate of 29.8% for Q1–Q3.

What your company is preparing

  • Official health certificate (MAPA or your regional government)
  • Ingredients and additives with percentages, and the manufacturing process
  • Declaration of origin on the invoice, for the reduced tariff

What your importer does

  • Import notification to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for each consignment
  • Label in Japanese, listing milk as a mandatory allergen
  • Customs clearance and payment of duties

Watch out for

  • Additives: each one must be authorised in Japan for that use
  • The tariff heading (0406.90) is for guidance only: please confirm it by means of a preliminary classification

Sources cited: Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) and Japan Customs tariff of 8 August 2026.

Why you can trust us

Each piece of data, with its source

The report cites the official Japanese or European source for each requirement and tariff, along with the date on which we verified it. You can open it and see for yourself.

Always up to date

Each sector has its own database, compiled from official sources and reviewed by the Japopedia team, and health-related closures are checked every night.

It tells you how much you can trust it

Each report has its own confidence level. If any verified data is missing, it will point this out and tell you how to confirm it.

What it doesn’t do: It does not provide legal advice or handle administrative procedures, certificates or translations, and only provides information on exporting to Japan. It is intended to help you be well-prepared when dealing with your importer, your adviser or customs.

Is it suitable for my product?

These sectors have their own data sets, compiled from official sources:
